GV Yishun, the cinema formerly known as Yishun 10, holds the quiet distinction of being Singapore's first multiplex, having opened its doors on 28 May 1992 at a time when Yishun had no proper town centre to speak of. The project was born from a 1990 government land sale that invited private developers to fill the gap, with Golden Village — a joint venture between Golden Harvest and Village Roadshow Corporation — winning the bid and breaking ground before the year was out. The multiplex introduced computerised ticketing and handicapped facilities to Singapore cinemas, firsts that are easy to take for granted today. A 2010 renovation stripped away its iconic neon-lit exterior in favour of a muted grey scheme and rebranded it from Yishun 10 to GV Yishun, a change that still quietly grieves a certain generation of Yishun residents.
