Khoo Teck Puat Hospital opened in Yishun in 2010, ending years of residents in Singapore's north having to travel south for acute hospital care. Originally conceived as a replacement for Alexandra Hospital under the name Jurong General Hospital, the project was scrapped and relocated to Yishun, with specialist outpatient clinics opening on 29 March 2010 and inpatient wards following on 28 June 2010. The hospital was named in honour of the late hotelier Khoo Teck Puat, whose family donated S$125 million toward its construction, replacing the planned name Alexandra Hospital @ Yishun. Minor delays attributed to an Indonesian sand ban and disrupted granite supplies pushed the initial timeline back by approximately three months, requiring contractors to bring in additional equipment and manpower to recover lost time.
