Yishun MRT station opened on 20 December 1988, a full two years ahead of its original schedule — a rare infrastructure win that set the tone for the area's rapid development. Originally named Nee Soon North, the station was renamed Yishun during the start of construction in December 1984, with the contract for its viaducts and structure awarded to French firm GTM Coignet in November 1985. The station went on to become a quiet pioneer: one of the first three elevated stations to trial platform screen doors, eventually receiving half-height PSDs in December 2009, and among the first ten stations to gain expanded bicycle parking under the 2010 National Cycling Plan. Yishun station also had high-volume low-speed fans installed by June 2012, keeping commuters cool long before such amenities were standard.
